Don’t Lose Your Gear: Check Your Transmission

Owning a car is a big responsibility and with that responsibility comes routine maintenance to ensure the longevity of your car. One area that needs routine maintenance is the cars transmission, but what exactly does the transmission do? Below is an explanation of what a transmission is and when it needs to be serviced:

  • Transmission- The transmission is responsible for shifting gears to make sure that your car has the right amount of power for a given speed.
  • Manual vs. Automatic Transmission- With a manual transmission the driver pushes the clutch disconnecting the transmission while the driver shifts to a different gear; once the clutch is released the transmission is reengaged. An automatic transmission senses changes in acceleration and automatically shifts to the correct gear for the speed you are driving.
  • Maintenance- Transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 to 100,000 miles depending on what is recommended in your car owner’s manual.
