Vehicle Knowledge: What is a Gasket?

At Auto Park Ford Bremen, we want our Bremen, IN consumers to be informed vehicle owners. Your car contains hundreds of gaskets that bind two or more surfaces together. This prevents gases and fluids in your vehicle from leaking and mixing.

Gaskets are made from multi-level steel, copper, rubber, and other durable materials, so they are long-lasting and can withstand extreme temperatures. However, gaskets will eventually need to be replaced. When deteriorating gaskets aren't changed, it can cause damage that leads to expensive repairs. The most common type of gasket is a head gasket. Other gaskets include exhaust manifold gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, and bearing gaskets.

It is important to keep your gaskets changed and look out for warning signs that let you know that your gaskets may be failing. Gurgling, bubbling and foaming near the radiator could mean that you may have a hole in a gasket. A white substance in or near your oil is another indicator of gasket failure.
